Under Bridge Spicy Crab
Yes, crab is one of my most favorite foods. But, it is not the same case for A. Although he agrees that crab is delicious, however, he often says that eating crab is messy and takes so much time and effort. Also, he thinks that the amount of crab meat that can be eaten from a single crab is too little. So, he usually orders a dish other than crabs whenever we go to restaurants specialized in crabs. Occasionally after I finish eating crabs, I break the remaining crabs to get the meat and then give it to A. In this way, he doesn’t mind eating ready-to-eat crab meat. Hehe…
About a few weeks prior to my departure to HK, I began to list the food I wanted to eat in Hong Kong. One of must-eat food is spicy crab. In one of Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservation” Hong Kong episodes, you could notice that he ate what they called Spicy Crab at Typhoon Shelter Crab. The restaurant is originally a shelter for fishing boats during a typhoon strike. But due to the decreasing number of fishermen in Hong Kong, some restaurants serving typhoon shelter-style cuisine have moved to shops on shore. This happened to the chef who owns the restaurant where Anthony Bourdain ate. As the chef moved to his on-shore shop, he named his restaurant Under Bridge Spicy Crab Restaurant at Causeway Bay-Wanchai District.
Walking along Lockhart Road in a hot, sunny, and very humid day, A and I tried to find the famous spicy crab restaurant. I finally found the restaurant, but sadly it was closed during day time. Fortunately, an old man came to tell us that there was another branch opened during day time not far from that location. Yippie… Thanks to him! We ordered spicy tofu (for A) and the famous spicy crab. I really wish that we came to the restaurant with more people so that we could order more different kinds of foods.
Waiting for the main dish, we were served with fried peanuts. It reminded me to the peanuts we usually have back in Indonesia. On the walls of the restaurant, you can see many impressive photos of the chef/owner with local celebrities. It really shows how popular the restaurant is to local people.
First, we had the spicy tofu. The outside of the tofu was very crispy but the inside was very soft. The tofu was sprinkled with salt, pepper, and fried garlic. I just loveeed it. And then the spicy crab arrived. And my first impression of the spicy crab was like: “Wow! I could hardly see the crab underneath the fried garlic.”
If you are a fan of Singapore Chili Crab, you definitely must try this spicy crab. This is a dry version of Singapore Chili Crab. It is deep fried and cooked with tons of garlic, chili, and scallion. You can adjust the degree of spiciness by telling the server when you first order it. We ordered medium spicy and it was a perfect suit for us. I think this crab is a “die, die must try” for all seafood lovers and garlic lovers. The garlic crumbs was so savory that I can only eat it with steamed rice. Two thumbs up for this restaurant! I will be back again next time I visit Hong Kong. Sorry for the poor lighting of the pictures. I was very hungry and couldn’t wait to eat the food. So, I didn’t want to spend more time to get better pictures of the food. Hehe…
Hong Kong is one of the most food-centric gastro destinations in the world. There are still plenty of foods you can discover at Hong Kong. You still can find many restaurants and snack vendors opened during late night. It is just awesome.
