Shalimar

category: restaurants
by Yun,

When I stayed at the bay area during the whole summer 2007, Shalimar was one of my favorite Indian restaurants. Shalimar is a must for all Indian food lovers. Indian restaurants normally don’t have beef listed in their menu. But Shalimar serves beef since it is an Indian-Pakistani restaurant. The menu itself is unique, printed on a large paper and put at the front of the cashier.

Shalimar is not a typical fine-dining restaurant where you usually can enjoy a relaxing ambiance and experience a good service. In Shalimar, you give your order directly to the cashier, grab eating utensils by yourself, find your own seats, and then pay with cash after the meal. Please remember, they don’t take credit cards or checks. The place itself is quite dirty; and the service is not good. But I have to admit that the food is truly delicious and you can’t complain about its inexpensive price.

As soon as I landed at San Francisco’s airport during my last vacation trip, I went straight to Shalimar. At that time, instead of going to Shalimar at Sunnyvale (the one that A and I used to go before), we chose to go to Shalimar at San Francisco because of its near location. Luckily, the lunch time had been over so there was no long line at the cashier. We ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, Murgh Tikka Lahori, Basmati Rice, and Plain Naan. You definitely must order Chicken Tikka Masala because the sauce is the best for dipping your naan into. It was a bit greasy but tastes heavenly. The Murgh Tikka Lahori is not to be missed. It tastes like Indonesian’s grilled chicken. It is well spiced, delicious, and hot (fresh from the traditional clay oven). The naan is fluffy and made to perfection. I really couldn’t ask for a better lunch.

Note: A always teases me by saying that I eat a lot in Shalimar. Hahaha… I always argue back and say that I don’t eat a lot in Shalimar but I eat slower than I usually do, because I want to enjoy the moment eating the mouth-watering Indian food.

I have to agree with you - Shalimar is generally my favorite indian restaurant. it is a tad greasy but they aren’t afraid of the spices (re: flavor, not heat) that seem to be lacking in other places like Naan’n'Curry.

I’ve never been to Naan’n'Curry. Since you said that shalimar was better so I will skip Naan’n'Curry for later
