Are you a doughnut lover?

You know what…. I was curious about this place once I read a first rate review about the little store down at Lower East Side Manhattan. And ever since it was featured on the Food Network’s Bobby Flay’s Throwdown show, I immediately put Doughnut Plant in my NYC food list. Earlier this month, I had another culinary trip to NYC. My first visit to Doughnut Plant was unsuccessful, since it was closed. The fact that they run out of doughnut quickly made me think, “Should I come here early in the morning in order to taste this legendary doughnut??” Uhm…. Or maybe I should check on Dean Deluca or Citarella nearby since they get doughnuts from the Doughnut Plant. We’ll see…

The following day, after lunch at Congee Restaurant and before our trip to Woodbury outlet, we decided to stop by this bakery again to test our luck and….. Tralala…the good news, I saw a long line inside that tiny little space. But, the bad news, they only had lavender flavor left for yeast doughnut, and for those, we could only order one per customer. Oh… Nooo!! How sad I was at that time, since I am a yeast lover, not a cake doughnut lover. After waiting in line about 20 minutes, I finally ordered mine. I got one lavender glazed yeast doughnut which I ate immediately once I got into the car, and four flavors of cake doughnuts. The lavender flavor was so fluffy and very aromatic. Even with my full stomach considering I just finished a very del.icio.us crab with salted egg yolk for lunch, this lavender was still a wholely different experience in my mouth.
Surprisingly, the cake doughnut was totally a blast! It was lighter than I thought it would be, and totally not a heavy, dense cake like the one you would get from Krispy Crème or other doughnut chain stores. Their signature cake doughnuts are the Tres Leches and Black Out. The Black Out is absolutely for a chocolate lover, a chocolate cake doughnut filled with melted dark chocolate then glazed with chocolate and still topped with chocolate crunch. Wow…. If you are a chocoholic, surely you will LOVE every bite of it, as it melts in your mouth.
Tres Leches is for a cream lover, a cake doughnut with an vanilla custard creamy inside of it. I only had a bite of it. It was moist, dry and custard-ish, and tasted quite good. But I personally vote for the Black Out for the winner of cake doughnut.
I was planning to bring some doughnuts back to Columbus on Monday for my friends but unfortunately they are closed on Monday. Sorry for my friends back in Columbus…If and only if they opened on Monday or I came back to Columbus on any other day than Monday, they would get a chance to taste this gourmet doughnut by now. *wink*
Interestingly, they have ten branches at Tokyo and one at Seoul, and yet only one open at New York City and no other store open at other big cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago or San Francisco. Why ?? This is so unfair, isn’t it?…
